An Isle of Wight selection continued the club’s good form with victory over their West Country tourists Bradford On Avon RFC at Wootton Rec.
Both teams played ambitious, ball-in-hand rugby in the spirit of the friendly fixture, though this ambition and the strong diagonal wind saw many passes fail to go to hand. Nonetheless, some excellent passages of play were to be seen as IW built a 25-0 lead at half-time.
The second half was closer on the scoreboard as the hosts were rewarded for their endeavour, though the Martin Newnham-captained Isle of Wight RFC had the final word. Among the try scorers were Luke Blackman, Alex Smith, Tom Marriott, Jordan Langdon, Luke Chandler and Ollie Scovell, while the latter added two conversions.
Afterwards, the teams and supporters repaired to the IWRFC clubhouse for several hours of good cheer and merry-making, with a return trip under discussion.
Isle of Wight RFC conclude their playing season on Saturday (4 May) against another touring side from the West Country, Old Culverhaysians from near Bath, with a 2 pm kickoff.
The club holds its AGM at the clubhouse on Thursday 9 May at 7.30pm, and looks forward to its annual awards night and dinner dance at Northwood House on 25 May.
