Match report: Vectis RFC U13s 50-35 Havant RFC U13, 17 March 2019

Vectis take advantage of the strong wind

Havant were our visitors today and they brought with them a squad of 22, sunshine and a strong wind!

The pre match chat seemed to work and for the first time this year Vectis started off strongly. Playing with the wind we camped in the Havant 22 and good forward pressure enabled Connor to spot a gap and he neatly exploited this to get our first score. This was quickly doubled as Archy powered through and touched down out wide.
The constant pressure really took its toll as Havant struggled to clear their lines, and two more tries came in this quarter as Sam J showed a clean pair of heels to score out wide on the right, then Edward danced through a gap and touched down also. Vectis went into the first break 4-1 up as Havant put some pressure on us and finished off a well worked try in the left corner.
The second quarter was a very different affair as we turned around and played into the very strong wind. Havant put us under constant pressure and scored two good tries before Archy got on the end of a few passes and found the far right try line. We lost this quarter 2-1 meaning at half time we were 5-3 up.

The Third quarter was the defining quarter as we played some sublime rugby and won this quarter 5-0. Edward made a couple of lovely runs to score twice in quick succession giving him his hat trick. Theo spotted the dogleg defence to sidestep and dive over, and Andrew who had a solid game at fly half, powered through to get the fourth. Edward finished the quarter with the final Vectis score of the match after a break by Rueben and an audacious offload landed in his hands and he touched down in the corner.
This left the score at 10-3 after the third quarter.
The final quarter was tough as the wind did not relent and to be fair, nor did Havant as they threw everything at Vectis.
They ran in two quick tries and this really spurred them on as Vectis struggled to get out of their quarter let alone half. Kicking by Vectis was not the right option and this out us under even more pressure and we coughed up another two tries, meaning a 4-0 loss in the last quarter.
The final score line was 10-7 and was our first ever win over Havant which the coaches were delighted with.

Thomas D, one of his best performances of the season as he put in some great tackles and runs. He is becoming a very accomplished prop who really gets around the park.

Sam N, much more aggressive on the field today and he carried the ball well into contact, enabling us some quick ball.

Ollie, becoming much more confident on the field and starting to get stuck into the rucks.

Hamish, a real thorn in Havant’s side as he was destructive in the loose and did the dirty work for Vectis.

Henry, one of his best performances today, as he got around the park well and carried the ball superbly.

Reuben, offload of the day to set up a try. Dynamic around the pitch with some great tackles put in.

Rhys, Mom today as he had his best performance in a Vectis shirt. I can remember a couple of rampaging runs straight through the heart of Havant which set up great field position.

Finn, played well today with good work around the park. Good supporting lines to do some of the hard yards in congested areas.

Archie, put in a good shift today as he covered the whole pitch. Some good cover tackles stopped Havant in their tracks.

Thomas C, his usual self, great energy around the park putting in some good tackles and great counter rucking.

Connor, great to have him back in a game, scored our first try and marshalled he pack well today.

Theo, put in a text book tackle whilst playing out of position on the wing, and played another quarter at his usual position with clear authority.
George, played out of position for a quarter too and did the team proud. had the other quarter at scrum half and kept their scrum half on his toes.
Andrew, with Hugh side lined, stepped into fly half and put in an accomplished performance, Captain today and led from the front in defence.

Archy, strong carries again today for his two scores, with one into the wind! Good tackling today too, although must not kick into the wind……….
Edward, dangerous all day as he ran in 4. Supported well too, with some good chases and tackles.

Leo, better defence today as he slowed down Havant attacks on several occasions, kept his width well today as we really stretched Havant.

Jack, great to see him back in a Vectis shirt and he did not disappoint. Put in some great tackles and also played at 10 for a quarter to great effect.

Sam J, showed his wheels on the outside for his score, but unfortunately hurt his ankle, so his time on the field was cut short.

Ben, lovely footwork shown again, and look forward to seeing him in full flight with those long strides.

Hugo, had a great game at fullback and ran the back at Havant with aplomb. Also tackled well today and made some timely cover tackles.

Eighteen lads made their first ever visit to Fareham Heathens and extended our unbeaten run.

Thomas Cole was skipper today and Vectis opted to play with the wind today for the first half.

We started off in a familiar pattern and quickly went 2 scores behind as their big runner exploited the width and raced through. This obviously woke the lads up and our own speedster Ben, took the overlap and galloped down the wing to touch down in the corner. This galvanised the lads and great forward momentum, led by the impressive Hamish kept us in the Heathens 22. The pressure finally told as Thomas C picked up, showed his strength and went over to bring the scores level at 2-2.

Edward then showed great feet to exploit a midfield gap to give Vectis the lead and by then it was all Vectis.

Leo went so close after a lovely team move as he was adjudged to be held up over the line and then Fred cut a great line to extend the lead.
Rhys who was powerful and quick all game caused havoc as he bulldozed through for the fifth score.

The final score of the half went to Vectis as Edward exploited the width and touched down on the right after a great pass by Hugh and Vectis went into half time 6-2 up.

A half time team talk, which Eddie Jones could take note from was to echo caution to the lads as we were to play into the stiff breeze for the rest of the game.

Heathens started strongly and scored again although slightly controversially as they had hands in the ruck to turnover ball, hacked downfield, possibly knock on and then touch down.

This was our warning and the pack came to the fore, Finn spilt a little blood, but carried on, Thomas D put in a great tackle to floor the Heathens player and great counter rucking, particularly by Reuben and Archie gave a quick ball that went through Hugh and Jacks hands to put Edward into space. Edward drew his man and put a great pass in front of Ben who took the ball well and put on the afterburners to race into the corner for his second. Heathens came back strong to score twice and at 7-5 and into the wind things looked a little tight.

However the pack rose to the fore again as Sam N carried well into the Heathens half, further carries by Finn and Reuben got us close, but they could not hold up Thomas C as he powered over for his second to give us some breathing space at 8-5.

Connor was getting back to fitness as he found a gap and snuck over in the corner and Edward grabbed his hat trick as he showed his pace to run in from halfway.

Henry rounded off the scoring as he supported the elusive Sam J to crash over leaving the final score 11-5 to Vectis.

Sam J was man of the match for his excellent performances at both wing and scrum half, he also had the dubious pleasure of a cola race with the Heathens mom!

Sam N. Much stronger carries today and certainly got around the park really well showing good fitness.

Hamish, started today and really is becoming a key member of the pack, strong in defence and great body position in the ruck ensured plenty of turnover ball.

Thomas D, put some cracking tackles in today and showed his strength to slow Heathens ball on several occasions.

Fred, a powerhouse all game and took several Heathens players over for the line with him for his score today.

Henry, a really strong game today and got around the park well, his fitness is really improving which showed as he supported Sam j well to collect the offload and score near the end of the game.

Finn, A warrior today and spilt claret for the team, which did not deter him at all as he got up, dusted himself off and soldiered on.

Rhys, his fitness is really on the up as he was everywhere today. His powerful runs continually put us in great field position and his dancing feet got him on the scoresheet.

Thomas Cole, his usual self-putting himself around the park and carrying really well. Showed great restraint with a new referee and lead the team really well today.

Reuben, one of his best games for Vectis as he jackaled really well today giving us plenty of turnover ball all game long.

Archie, a great game as he played centre for 10 minutes in the second half and adjusted really well. A real handful in the loose and it will be great to see Thomas, Reuben and Archie working together as back row next year.
Connor, getting his fitness back and growing with each game. Showed his game sense also to snipe around fringes for his score.

Sam J, our own pocket rocket. Mom today for his energy and quick ball from scrum half. Also floored their big player with a fear less tackle which stopped him in his tracks.

Andrew played at 10 and fullback and showed his value to the team. Vocal on the pitch and organised as he marshals his players well.
Jack, another strong game, certainly in defence where he is difficult to get past. Worked well with Hugh today.

Hugh, always consistent with some good distribution and textbook tackles to boot. Was the glue in the back line today as we had boys playing out of normal positions.

Edward, just knows where the try line is and showed great awareness and skill to put Ben in for his second.

Ben, got over his initial handling to add real speed to our back line which was so evident as he steamed down the touch line outpacing their pace men for the first Vectis score.

Leo, was denied by an unsighted ref today but showed that his stamina and pace are there also on several occasions, has great feet also.
