Match report: Fordingbridge RFC U13s 0-12 Vectis RFC U13s, 24 March 2019

Seventeen lads took to the seas for their first fixture against Fordingbridge RFC.

Perfect rugby weather and a lovely playing surface greeted the boys and they did not disappoint

Vectis were quickly out of the blocks as they played with the breeze and Archy took the ball after a solid scrum and strode clear to put the first try on the board. He was instrumental in the second try as he put a good long pass out to Edward who gassed around the outside to score the second. Great forward driving and defence gave us territory and several pops later Fred was the recipient as he crashed over for the third try. A great offload by Thomas C in the wide channel put Edward in for his second and Fred grabbed his second also with a great reach as he placed the ball down one handed!

We went into half time 5-0 up, and expected a tough second half as we would be into the breeze. This was not the case as we completely dominated the second half and showed no mercy as we controlled the game throughout scoring another 7 tries, but more importantly shutting Fordingbridge out. Hamish, our man of the match today, collected a another offload and powered over. A great steal off the tackled player by Edward put Archy into space and he cantered over. Hugh , who controlled the game beautifully today, picked up a knock on and sidestepped through several defenders to get the 8th. Thomas Cole strode through the defence, looked for the pass, but realised it wasn’t on and touched down himself.

Another offload put Edward in for his hat trick and then came a great solo effort from Ben. Ben collected the ball in his own half showed crazy feet and put the hammer down as he left defenders in his wake for a top try. Henry rounded off the scoring with great support as he collected the ball and powered over.

The final score was 12-0 and it really was a wonderful team performance today.

Fred – strong all day and will be missed for the Eastleigh game, but Florida I am sure will be amazing. His second try was incredible as he held the ball one handed to stretch over. His little speech after the game was good to see.

Hamish – our man of the match today as he played the whole game. All over the field and a real nuisance to the opposition, also stole a scrum against the head.

Henry – one of his best games today as he upped his work rate and was always in support, one of these leading to his score.

Thomas D – a real powerhouse and one of my favourite plays today as he collected Hugh’s neat inside pass and ran deep into Fordingbridge’s 22.

Finn – looks so much more assured now and put himself about to great effect today. Some of his tackling was textbook today.

Rhys – the workhorse and tirelessly did the hard yards. Will be our second row warrior for years to come and his long limbs get him around the park with great effect.

Reuben – really is a handful now and his jackalling is superb, and very difficult for the opposition to shift him.

Achie – another fantastic game today and is really becoming a versatile player as he joined the backs again in the second half. He works selflessly for the team and really does put his heart and soul into each game.

Thomas C – strong carries again today and offload of the day as he set up a score in the corner. Very good communication also as he made sure players were in the right positions for different plays.

Connor – fitness is coming back and he marshalled the pack well today. His passing was much crisper today and he found Hugh on every occasion.

Sam J – a right little terrier again today and even took on the big boys from a tap penalty. Really good service today ensuring Hugh had an armchair ride.

Hugh – his best display at 10 today as he orchestrated the game. The inside pop ball to Thomas D was a delight as was his try.

Archy – strong presence today with his usual strong running. His passing was so much better also as he set up a couple also.

Jamie – a great asset to this team as his tackles constantly put Fordingbridge under pressure, allowing us to dominate territory. Not too shabby in the pace stakes either and look forward to his development with us going forward.

Leo – now putting in the tackles as he did not give his opposite number any space all day. Showed good hands also in the wide channels and always stayed on the pitch ensuring we retained possession.

Ben – what great pace and feet as he scored today, looking more comfortable with each game, considering he has been poorly he put in a great shift today.

Edward – his pace is so dangerous and is becoming a scoring machine. Was certainly a lot stronger in contact this week and this helped him win the steal.
