In a game that had controversy and debate, the Island could not register their first win of 2019.
With a dominant scrum pressurising the visiting pack and forcing them on the back foot, the Island gained an 11 – 0 lead through two Lewis Murray penalties and a well worked Andrew Brown try from a lineout. With the home side in the ascendancy, at the 20 minute stage, an Overton front row injury caused the player to leave the field. Overton, claiming to have no other player to play in the front row, contrary to the team sheet, insisted on uncontested scrums, much to the anger and disgust of the home side.
This proved to change the whole focus and pattern of the match as the clear advantage to apply pressure through a dominant pack was removed, allowing more space and time for Overton to play. Sure enough, this advantage was taken with three tries by half time.
The second half had the Island mainly on the offensive, but the only reward was a Grant Smith try, despite creating a number of chances. It was Overton who made pressure pay with a further try, adding a fifth on the stroke of full time.
Biffa Man of the Game was Kevin Blackburn, while Owain Hooper, in his second game for the first team, was rewarded with the Rouse Man of the Match award.
The Island sides now have a week’s break before both teams travel away on the 26th January, with the 1sts at Ellingham & Ringwood and the 2nds looking to continue their unbeaten season with a tough trip to Kingsclere.
