Match report: Overton RFC 1XV v Isle of Wight RFC 1XV, 8 December 2018

Overton RFC 1XV 10 -13 Isle of Wight RFC 1XV

Despite a late arrival due to travel conditions, the Island were quickly into the game against an Overton side some three places above them in Hampshire 1.

With a start in the back row, Luke Blackman showed his prowess with early turnover ball, but it was the home side who struck first with a try. But back came the Island with good pressure and Blackman was rewarded for his earlier play with a try to level the scores. With the heavy pitch conditions and poor weather conditions making the game difficult for both sides, Overton scored again and took a 10-5 lead in to the half time break.

The second half saw the Islanders maintain a sustained domination, with forwards Ian Puzey, Andi Raunigger, Andy Brown and Biffa man of the match Grant Smith all to the fore. A fine Chris Ormerod try brought the sides back level at 10-10. A draw seemed likely, but with four minutes remaining, Lewis Murray stepped up to slot the winning penalty. Credit must go to the focussed effort of all players, with Rouse Ltd man of the day Owain Hooper making his first team debut off the bench.

Next Saturday the Island sides entertain Alton with a 2pm kick off at Wootton Rec, the last games before Christmas.
