Match report: Trojans RFC 2XV v Isle of Wight RFC 1XV, 03/11/2018

Trojans RFC 2XV 12-7 Isle of Wight RFC 1XV

Isle of Wight slipped to a disappointing defeat at Trojans. In a game where the stiff breeze played a central part, IW performed below par and without the accuracy needed to win games at Hampshire One level.

Facing the wind in the first half, IW were often pinned back by excellent kicking from the Trojans stand-off, who was given a good platform by a hefty pack of forwards. Pressure applied by those forwards forced turnovers and yielded two tries for a 12-0 advantage.

The second half was a different story as IW now had complete territorial dominance but could not translate this into valuable scores. Handling errors and lack of cohesion bedevilled the Islanders’ efforts to get back on terms, and it was only towards the end that a try was engineered for full-back Jonty Sweetman. Lewis Murray added the conversion, and IW battled to the end but ran out of time, left with only a bonus point for their efforts.

IW have a week off to regroup before hosting Winchester II on 17 November.

IW: Sweetman, M Smith, Rann, L Blackman, Reed, Murray, Marriott, Puzey, Newnham, Blackburn, G Smith, Brown, Curran, Webster, D Blackman, Raunigger, T Groves.
