Match report: Southampton RFC 1XV v Isle of Wight RFC 1XV, 29/09/2018

Southampton RFC 1XV 29-49 Isle of Wight RFC 1XV

Travelling to Southampton with 8 changes to last weeks game did not ultimately affect the islanders performance. From the start the visitors made inroads in the home defence and were rewarded with a Lewis Murray penalty. The first scrum resulted in the Island shunting back the Southampton pack, an area that they were to dominate throughout.

Returning a home kick saw the ball offloaded to Sam McQueen, who drove some 15 meters to touch down, Murray adding the kick.

Further pressure on the home line allowed James Webster to crash over, again converted.

Southampton were not going to lie down and came back, firstly after spending time on the Islands line to score and then by a counter attack from their own 22 line.

This and the half time break, seemed to rejuvenate the Island, as debutant and Biffa Man of the Match Martin Smith released George Huish who offloaded to another debutant, James Reed to score, Murray again adding the kick.

Back came Southampton, driving a line to score.

Again Smith popped up to give a basketball pass to Jonty Sweetman for a try. Opting for a 5 meter scrum, the ball was recycled for Grant Smith to crash over.

Now in control, a Webster break and good close support lead to the impressive Andrew Brown to batter through the remaining defence. The kick added.

Back came Southampton with another driving line, before George Huish intercepted to go in under the posts, Murray adding the extra points.

It was the home side who had the last say as they touched down with the last pay of the game.

With the 2nd XVs win, the club has had back to back double wins and now look towards next Saturday when the 1sts entertain Ellingham & Ringwood and the 2nds Kingsclere, both at Wootton Recreation Ground 3pm kick off.
